Akçın: Citrus Production Stagnant, Farmers Concerned
Chairman of the Northern Cyprus Citrus Producers Association, Turgut Akçın, highlighted stagnation in the citrus market, noting that although initial purchases began positively, they quickly slowed down. He expressed concerns over the situation, urging the government to prepare for per-ton support for producers.
In a written statement, Akçın pointed out that citrus harvests, including lemons and grapefruits, are typically completed by January, with mandora harvesting starting afterward. However, he revealed that no harvesting has commenced this year for any product.
Akçın warned that further delays in starting the mandora harvest could lead to mature fruits falling to the ground, exacerbating losses for farmers. The situation, he emphasized, has left citrus producers increasingly worried about their livelihoods.
