Child from Mixed Marriage Granted Republic of Cyprus Citizenship
In a landmark judicial decision in South Cyprus, the child of a mixed marriage—a Turkish Cypriot mother and a Turkish father—has been granted Republic of Cyprus citizenship.
Judicial Victory After Years of Rejection
The family, whose applications had gone unanswered since 2017, won their case in court after years of persistence. The couple, who married in Cyprus before 1974, had their child’s citizenship denied without any explanation, prompting legal action.
Court Ruling: "Illegal Entry Does Not Deny Citizenship Rights"
The presiding judge ruled that the citizenship claim could not be dismissed on the grounds that one parent had entered Cyprus illegally. The court deemed the prolonged inaction on the application unacceptable.
Fulfillment of Citizenship Criteria
The court highlighted that the Republic’s Council of Ministers had established clear criteria for citizenship eligibility. The judge noted that the child met these requirements, stating that even a parent entering Cyprus without proper documentation should not disqualify the child from citizenship.
