Attempted Assassination in North Cyprus: Suspect Sent to Prison
Ünal Sivri, a 35-year-old man accused of entering North Cyprus to assassinate a businessman, has been remanded in custody for up to two months. The suspect was apprehended during a police operation and reportedly confessed to the planned attack.
Sivri was arrested during the "No Passage Operation," coordinated by the Nicosia and Kyrenia Police Departments' Crime Prevention Unit. According to Police Sergeant Ömer Yavuz, the suspect was intercepted on December 30, 2024, while riding a motorcycle on Sedat Simavi Street in Kyrenia.
Authorities seized a handgun, a magazine, and six live bullets from Sivri. The suspect admitted to arriving in December 2024 by hiding inside a truck aboard a ship from Mersin to Famagusta Port. His target was a businessman in Kyrenia.
Police investigations revealed that Sivri used a South Cyprus mobile number to communicate with three contacts. Ballistic analysis of the seized weapon and ammunition has been completed, and investigations into his connections are ongoing.
During the hearing, Judge Evren Mürsel highlighted the seriousness of the crime and ordered Sivri's detention for no more than two months. Investigations continue into the suspect's network and motives.
