Modern AMATEM Unit Opens to Combat Addiction
Minister of Health Dr. Hakan Dinçyürek inaugurated the new modern unit of the Alcohol and Substance Addiction Treatment Center (AMATEM) at Barış Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital, marking a significant step in addressing addiction-related needs.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dinçyürek emphasized the government’s commitment to completing unfinished projects and launching new ones under the Prime Minister's directives.
"A Major Step in the Fight Against Addiction"
Dinçyürek stated, “Today, we are proud to open this modern and independent unit within AMATEM. This center addresses a critical need in society and reflects our dedication to combating addiction effectively. I thank everyone who contributed to this achievement.”
Highlighting the growing need for psychiatric care, Dinçyürek noted the increase in the number of psychiatrists and underlined the urgency of addressing addiction. He revealed that the 2025 budget includes significant funds to complete the unfinished AMATEM facility, with the tender process expected to conclude within the year. Until the permanent facility is ready, a temporary but modern unit will serve the community.
Separate Units for Psychotic and Addicted Patients
Dinçyürek added, “From now on, psychotic and addicted patients will no longer be treated under the same roof. They will receive care in separate, modern units staffed with qualified health professionals. This step will significantly improve the quality of care and aligns with our goal of fostering an addiction-free society. If anyone struggles with addiction, the state is here to help.”
Improved Facilities and Services
Dr. Abidin Akbirgün, Chief Physician of Barış Hospital, also addressed the ceremony, stating, “While addiction treatment services existed before, sharing the same space with psychotic patients was unsuitable. Now, we have a 19-bed modern center with private rooms, rehabilitation areas, psychologists, and specialized doctors. Thanks to the Ministry of Health's support, we have achieved a contemporary facility. This is a significant milestone for our community.”
The new AMATEM unit is expected to play a vital role in combating addiction and providing much-needed support for individuals and families affected by substance abuse.
