Alaslan Family: "Greek Police Are Targeting Us"
Following allegations involving the death of a Pakistani youth in Potami, reportedly caused by a police bullet, Turkish Cypriot Coşkun Alaslan and Halil Alaslan spoke to Gıynık Gazetesi's Devrim Demir regarding their names being linked to the incident. The Alaslan family emphasized that the accusations stemmed from past conflicts with Greek Cypriot police, stressing that they are victims in this situation.
The Alaslan family shared their perspective on the situation with the following statements:
Halil Alaslan: "I’m 62 years old, working in farming and livestock. Since our village is near the border, we usually receive information about such incidents, both from the media and those who come to us. However, we have no connection to this incident. I was spraying crops in the morning when my son informed me, and we immediately went to Demirhan Police Station. We contacted the police ourselves, and if we were involved in any crime, they would have found us already. We are upset because the Greek Cypriot police have falsely accused us."
Coşkun Alaslan pointed out that the allegations were rooted in a previous incident with the Greek Cypriot police: "I’m a father of three and work in agriculture and livestock. The Greek Cypriot police have held a prejudice against me since a confrontation in 2012. When I saw this news on social media this morning, I immediately contacted the police. These accusations are completely unfounded. The Greek Cypriot police constantly target me and try to tarnish my name, using past events as an excuse."
"We Expect a Statement from the Turkish Police"
The Alaslan family stressed that they expect the Turkish police to clarify the situation as soon as possible and clear their names.
Halil Alaslan: "No one has the right to tarnish our reputation like this in society. We will pursue all necessary legal actions."
Coşkun Alaslan: "These kinds of accusations deeply affect both us and our family. We ask for more sensitivity in handling such matters."
The Alaslan family clarified that they have no direct communication with the Greek Cypriot police and only became aware of the accusations through social media. They called for their grievances to be addressed.
