Turkey Condemns US Decision to Sell Arms to South Cyprus
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly criticized the United States' decision to authorize arms sales and military training for the S Cyprus
In a written statement, the ministry expressed its disapproval, aligning with the views outlined by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
"We condemn the decision announced yesterday by the US, designating the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCASC) as an eligible country for arms sales and military training. We view this move, which will escalate armament activities on the island, as a grave mistake," the statement said.
Noting the sensitive state of the region, the statement emphasized the importance of all parties avoiding provocative actions and acting with prudence. It also expressed hope that the incoming US administration would reverse this decision made by the current President.
"As the guarantor state, Turkey will continue to support measures aimed at enhancing the defense and deterrence capabilities of the TRNC," the statement added.
US Presidential Decision
US President Joe Biden recently authorized the GCASC to procure "defense articles and services" from the US under the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961.
The White House stated that providing defense materials to the GCASC would "strengthen US security and promote world peace."
