Ertuğruloğlu: "The Future of Cyprus Will Be Based on Two Sovereign and Equal States"
Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu criticized Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides for attending an event commemorating the 75th anniversary of the 1950 plebiscite advocating for Cyprus’s unification with Greece (ENOSIS).
Ertuğruloğlu stated that the Greek Cypriot leadership, population, and Church remain committed to the idea of ENOSIS, treating it as a cause for celebration. He emphasized that those who believe a settlement based on federation is still possible should take lessons from the images of this event.
"Federation Advocates Should Reflect"
The minister underscored that while the Greek Cypriot side projects an image of supporting a "federation," it is merely a tactic to buy time with the backing of the international community. He added that the Greek Cypriot side benefits from being treated as the sole legitimate representative of Cyprus, while the Turkish Cypriot side faces pressure to agree to proposals that have proven futile.
"International Community’s Double Standards"
Ertuğruloğlu highlighted the international community's inconsistency, pointing to the 2004 rejection of the UN-backed Annan Plan by Greek Cypriots. Despite this, they faced no repercussions and were even rewarded, while Turkish Cypriots, who supported the plan, continue to face isolation.
"A Pretense of Negotiation"
He criticized the ongoing narrative supporting the Greek Cypriot leadership’s commitment to federal solutions, calling it "naïve at best." According to Ertuğruloğlu, the unilateral admission of the Greek Cypriot side into the EU in 2004 effectively created a de facto unification with Greece.
"Path Forward: Two Sovereign States"
Concluding his statement, Ertuğruloğlu called on the international community to abandon its flawed approach and recognize the realities of the Cyprus issue. He reaffirmed that the future of the island must be built on the foundation of two sovereign and equal states, asserting that the Greek Cypriot side has no genuine intention of reaching a settlement.
