AKEL Criticizes US Military Program Decision
AKEL has voiced strong opposition to the recent US decision granting the Republic of Cyprus access to three military programs. The party demanded clarity on the rationale behind the decision, expressing concerns over its implications.
In its statement, AKEL criticized the US for its previous arms embargo on Cyprus, describing it as unjust and illogical. The party accused the US of applying a biased approach to the region.
"Danger to Strategic Relationships"
AKEL condemned the Rubio-Menendez Act, which prioritizes US strategic interests in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, and requires Cyprus to distance itself from countries like Russia and China. The party expressed disapproval of the support the Christodoulides government has shown for the Act, warning that it jeopardizes vital relationships with key global players.
"Foreign Policy in Reverse"
AKEL emphasized that Cyprus’s foreign policy should aim to build alliances and gain support for the country. However, the current trajectory appears counterproductive, potentially isolating Cyprus from influential partners, including permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.
Call for Transparency and Prudence
The party called on the government to disclose the details and framework of the US decision and urged a foreign policy that prioritizes Cyprus's national interests without undermining ties with major global powers.
