Seven Fatalities in 17 Days: Minister Arıklı Highlights Driver Errors
Minister of Public Works and Transport, Erhan Arıklı, addressed the tragic loss of seven lives in traffic accidents during the first 17 days of 2025. While acknowledging the poor state of roads, Arıklı emphasized the need to focus on the primary causes of these accidents—driver errors.
"Don’t Overlook the Root Causes," Arıklı Says
In a social media statement, Arıklı remarked, "We can criticize and call for the resignation of those governing this country, myself included. However, for the sake of fairness, let us not overlook the causes of these tragic accidents that have claimed seven lives."
Recurring Issues: Poor Roads and Budget Constraints
The fatalities have reignited public criticism of the Public Works and Transport Ministry, particularly the Department of Highways, over poorly maintained and dark roads. Arıklı admitted that some roads are in poor condition and that budget constraints hinder improvements. He also pointed out the rising number of vehicles—about 2,500 added monthly—against the unchanged capacity of roads.
Police Findings: Speeding and Negligence
The Police Department revealed that six fatal accidents occurred, claiming seven lives—four drivers and three passengers. Five of the accidents were caused by excessive speeding, one by driver negligence, and one involved an intoxicated driver.
Their statement highlighted:
- Primary causes: Driver errors due to speeding, negligence, and failure to follow traffic rules.
- Appeal: "We urge all drivers to adhere to traffic regulations for a safer journey on the roads."
Arıklı concluded by reiterating the shared responsibility in addressing traffic safety: "While infrastructure improvements are vital, driver behavior and adherence to traffic rules are equally critical in preventing further tragedies."
