Candan: Concrete Steps Must Be Taken for Progress in Cyprus Issue
CTP MP Armağan Candan emphasized the need for tangible steps to be taken in the Cyprus issue, referencing the recent meeting between Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides in the buffer zone.
Candan made the remarks as a guest on the "Sabah Postası" program on Kıbrıs Postası TV, hosted by Gökhan Altıner.
Candan discussed the meeting between the two leaders and the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Cyprus, Colin Stewart, stressing that concrete actions are essential for positive outcomes in the negotiations.
"Progress on Crossing Points is Crucial"
Candan highlighted that opening new crossing points would significantly benefit relations between the two communities. He noted that the opening of a new border crossing in Nicosia could reduce congestion at the Metehan crossing and make daily life easier for people in the Değirmenlik-Famagusta area.
"It is unacceptable to wait for hours at crossing points in this day and age," Candan stated, urging leaders to take actions that would ease the lives of the people.
"Solving the Cyprus Issue Will Offer Opportunities for Both Turkey and Turkish Cypriots"
Candan argued that resolving the Cyprus issue would enhance Turkey’s regional power and offer significant benefits to Turkish Cypriots. He noted that Turkey's growing importance in Europe would further boost these opportunities.
Candan also pointed out the rising traffic accidents, ongoing infrastructure projects that have remained unfinished for years, and general public dissatisfaction in Northern Cyprus. "A hospital project that began in 2015 is still incomplete, roads are dark and neglected, and people have lost hope for the future," he remarked.
Candan concluded by emphasizing that leaders must meet more frequently to address issues that will improve the lives of the people, stressing that both leaders play a critical role in managing this process.
