Karavezirler: "Ready to Support Opening of Akıncılar-Limya Crossing"
Değirmenlik Akıncılar Municipality Mayor Ali Karavezirler described the recent meeting between President Ersin Tatar and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides regarding crossing points as highly positive for both Akıncılar and its residents. "We are ready for the Akıncılar-Limya crossing. All that’s needed is an agreement," he said.
Karavezirler emphasized the strong desire among Akıncılar residents, including former mayors, to see the crossing opened, highlighting the significant efforts made to achieve this goal. He expressed hope for an agreement to be reached soon.
Speaking via phone on Kıbrıs Postası TV during the Canan Onurer ile Sabah Haberleri program, Karavezirler shared his perspective on the leaders’ discussions regarding crossing points in the buffer zone.
He noted that following the leaders’ October 2024 dinner, he met with President Tatar on October 17 to discuss the matter. "We are pushing for Akıncılar-Limya, while the Greek Cypriot side insists on the Kiracıköy crossing," Karavezirler said.
While the initial focus was on the Haspolat crossing, he explained, the Greek Cypriot side introduced Kiracıköy as an alternative. In response, "our government proposed the Akıncılar crossing instead," he added.
"More Crossings Are Needed to Ease Congestion"
Karavezirler stressed the importance of opening any crossing point to alleviate congestion, noting that increased crossings could ease the current strain.
Highlighting the close proximity between Akıncılar and Limya—just 380 meters—Karavezirler reiterated their readiness to facilitate the Akıncılar crossing.
Following yesterday's announcements, Karavezirler mentioned that he had spoken with President Tatar and would meet him again on Friday for further discussions regarding crossing points.
"There's a belief and determination, and we’re seeing increasing activity in Akıncılar, Limya, and Kiracıköy," he said, adding that opening all crossings on the island would significantly benefit residents’ daily lives and the economy.
Strategic Importance of Akıncılar
Karavezirler underscored Akıncılar's strategic location near Ercan Airport, only 10 kilometers away, and its role as a connecting point for central Mesaoria. He noted that opening the crossing would ease travel and provide substantial relief to the area.
"Additional Crossings Needed in Nicosia"
Karavezirler also pointed out the need for more crossings in Nicosia, emphasizing their potential importance. Referring to the Pile road issue, he noted, "The road passes through Yiğitler village. So far, 8-9 kilometers of asphalt have been completed, with only 1.5 to 2 kilometers remaining. Hopefully, a solution is near."
He highlighted that discussions regarding crossing points have been ongoing for approximately 16 months and that only President Tatar and the government could resolve this issue.
Addressing security concerns, Karavezirler stated, "If crossings are opened, our soldiers will take the necessary precautions. That is their job. What matters is believing in this process and moving forward with conviction."
