Özuslu: More Crossing Points Must Be Opened
CTP MP Sami Özuslu emphasized the necessity of opening additional crossing points following the leaders' discussions in the buffer zone. “Anyone unconvinced should go wait in the queues at the Metehan crossing point and see for themselves,” he stated.
Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV's program Morning News with Canan Onurer, Özuslu responded to questions over the phone.
"Tatar Had to Accept the Talks"
Özuslu highlighted that both leaders have failed to listen to their communities. Referring to President Ersin Tatar’s past remarks that he would not engage in negotiations without the acceptance of sovereign equality, Özuslu noted, “Tatar did not willingly attend the talks on crossing points; he had no choice but to accept.”
"Neither Leader Has Public Support"
He argued that neither Tatar nor Christodoulides enjoys robust support from their respective communities. Referring to criticism from DISY leader and House Speaker Annita Dimitriou, Özuslu noted that even Christodoulides' own party has been critical of him.
“Tatar, on the other hand, is rapidly becoming the only Turkish Cypriot leader who hasn’t opened a single crossing point,” said Özuslu, adding that while Tatar previously dismissed the Akıncılar crossing as unnecessary, he is now pushing to open it.
"Both Leaders Are Status Quo-Oriented"
Özuslu described both leaders as “status quo defenders who see lack of resolution as a solution.” He also expressed concern about increasing militarization in the South, stating that this undermines security and creates tension.
“Tourists won’t choose a destination embroiled in a militarization race and constant military activity,” he said, adding that Cyprus’ failure to prioritize confidence-building measures over armament would hurt both North and South.
Özuslu concluded by warning that British bases' frequent operations from the island could make Cyprus a target, threatening both security and tourism.
