21-Year-Old Syrian Arrested for Attack on Bayraktar Mosque

Greek Cypriot police have arrested a 21-year-old Syrian national for attacking the Bayraktar Mosque in South Nicosia. According to Haravgi newspaper, the individual was detained on January 16 for damaging the mosque and assaulting a person with a stick.

The police confirmed reports from the Turkish Cypriot press that the Bayraktar Mosque had been attacked twice with a knife. Following a call, the police arrived at the scene and found damage to the mosque's door and toilet window, and received a complaint from a person regarding the attack.

Based on investigations and descriptions, the police identified and arrested the individual, who was found in possession of a knife. The 21-year-old Syrian appeared in the Nicosia (Greek) District Court on January 17, where he admitted to the charges and was fined before being released.

On January 18, the police received another call but were unable to identify the perpetrator, leading to an arrest warrant being issued. On January 19, the police received another call about an attack on the mosque congregation and damage to the mosque. The police team arrested the 21-year-old individual in the area based on a court order.

According to the report, the 21-year-old Syrian appeared in the Nicosia (Greek) District Court on January 20, where he was given an eight-day detention order.

Evkaf Reacts to Attacks on Bayraktar Mosque

Alithia newspaper reported that the Evkaf (Cyprus Foundations Administration) reacted to the attacks on the Bayraktar Mosque in Nicosia, highlighting the damages caused by the young Syrian.
