Siber Criticizes Government for Dismissing Its Own Appointees; Demands Explanation to Public
Former Prime Minister and Speaker of the Parliament Sibel Siber pointed out the recent changes in ministerial appointments, stating, "It is not understandable for the same government to dismiss the bureaucrats it appointed. They owe an explanation to the public." Siber made these remarks during her appearance on the "Sabah Postası" program, hosted by Gökhan Altıner on Kıbrıs Postası TV.
Sibel Siber made striking statements about the economic crisis, institutional weaknesses, and issues in governance. She noted that poor economic management negatively affects all segments of society.
Siber emphasized that economic difficulties place a significant burden on small businesses, tradespeople, and minimum wage earners. "Due to exorbitant electricity prices and poor economic policies, small businesses are struggling to stay afloat. Businesses are on the brink of closure, fighting to cut costs," she said.
"Reducing the Cost of Living is Essential"
Highlighting the importance of reducing the cost of living rather than merely increasing the minimum wage, Siber said, "What matters is increasing purchasing power. The struggle for livelihood is becoming increasingly difficult due to the high cost of living."
Siber stated that institutions are being managed without merit, negatively impacting both institutional memory and problem-solving capacity.
"It is clear that you cannot succeed with bureaucrats appointed without regard to merit for political purposes to benefit yourself and your circle. We are seeing increasing weaknesses in the institutional memory, knowledge, and problem-solving capacity of bureaucrats," she said.
"The Same Government is Dismissing Its Own Appointees"
Referring to the recent changes in the Ministry of Interior, Siber said, "It is not understandable for the same government to dismiss the bureaucrats it appointed. They owe an explanation to the public. Public institutions are not private companies; you have a responsibility to the public."
Siber recalled that the highest offices of the state used to carry significant responsibility. "Positions like the Prime Ministry, Speakership of the Parliament, and Presidency used to hold great meaning for the public. Now, people think, 'What difference does it make?' This is quite sad," she said.
"Parliamentary Work Used to Be Much More Valuable"
Siber noted that past parliamentary work was different and more valuable. "When you look at old parliamentary records, there are long, well-prepared speeches. Comparing it to the current situation is saddening," she said.
Sibel Siber emphasized that bringing together knowledgeable and experienced individuals to create a common mind is essential for solving current problems.
