DiCarlo's Visit to Cyprus Remains Uncertain
The exact date of United Nations Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo's visit to Cyprus has not been confirmed.
The ongoing uncertainties surrounding the second leaders' meeting, the opening of new crossing points, and progress in negotiations continue to persist. Differences between the parties remain unresolved.
Haravgi newspaper reported that the current situation in Cyprus aligns with the phrase "hope while we live," but everything is still up in the air. The newspaper noted that neither the second leaders' meeting, DiCarlo's visit, nor the opening of new crossing points have been finalized.
The newspaper also mentioned that despite the negative stance of the Turkish Cypriot side on opening crossing points to Gaziler and Erenköy, they continue to insist on opening crossing points to Haspolat and Akıncılar. Despite the challenges, possibilities still exist.
Negotiations at the level of the negotiators continue, and the newspaper highlighted that the Greek Cypriot side is not willing to meet the demands of the Turkish Cypriot side, while there are also those who do not want the new crossing points to open.
The newspaper emphasized that the key question is how much maneuvering space the parties are willing to give to achieve progress on the crossing points. It also mentioned that President Ersin Tatar announced he might meet with Greek Cypriot President Nikos Hristodoulidis in early February, but no specific date was given, and it was suggested that this uncertainty may delay DiCarlo's visit.
