Simon Aykut has denied all 242 charges against him at the Greek Cypriot Assize Court. While the court rejected the defense’s request for a 40-day postponement to file an appeal with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), the trial has been scheduled to begin on March 26. Meanwhile, security measures have been heightened due to a threat message allegedly directed at President Nikos Christodoulides.

The latest hearing at the Greek Cypriot Assize Court for Afik Group CEO, Turkish-Jewish businessman Simon Mistriel Aykut, was held under strict security measures following a reported threat against President Christodoulides. Two plainclothes officers, with visible official identification, conducted ID checks on those attempting to enter the courtroom.
Court Rejects Postponement Request
The defense requested a 40-day postponement to prepare an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), but the court denied the request and set the trial date for March 26.
A legal battle over Aykut’s health condition is also expected to take place today at the Assize Court. Reports indicate that three different medical assessments—one from the Greek Cypriot Central Prison’s doctor, another from a doctor brought from the UK, and a third from the Nicosia General Hospital—have provided conflicting evaluations.
Alleged Threat Against President Christodoulides
Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides shared details of a threatening message he allegedly received on Instagram with his cabinet and other officials following Wednesday’s Council of Ministers meeting.
Reports suggest that the English-language message included the phrase:
"If he is not released within a few hours and this case is not withdrawn, you will see what happens to you."
The message was allegedly accompanied by a bomb emoji. Authorities are investigating the matter, and high-level security measures for Christodoulides have been in place since last Friday.
Dispute Over Aykut’s Health Condition
During the hearing, Aykut’s lawyer, Maria Neophytou, challenged the prosecution’s request to keep Aykut in custody until trial, citing medical concerns.
According to the defense, a UK-based doctor who examined Aykut suggested that he might have cancer. However, the Greek Cypriot prison doctor insisted that Aykut was in excellent health, while a urologist from Nicosia General Hospital—who examined Aykut on Wednesday—reported that he does not have cancer but has an enlarged prostate.
The Assize Court is set to hear sworn testimonies from all three doctors before making a final decision on Aykut’s detention.
Tougher Penalties for "Illegal Use of Greek Cypriot Properties"
Meanwhile, the Greek Cypriot House of Representatives has passed a law increasing penalties for the “illegal use” of former Greek Cypriot properties in Northern Cyprus.
Proposed by DISY MP Rita Superman, the law aims to deter property sales in the north. Under the revised legislation:
- The prison sentence for those who possess, operate, or use a property belonging to a third party has increased from 2 years to 5 years.
- The monetary fine has doubled from €5,000 to €10,000.
