58 Traffic Accidents in One Week: One Fatality Reported

Between February 3 and 9, a total of 58 traffic accidents occurred in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), resulting in one fatality and 18 injuries. Speeding remained the leading cause of accidents. During traffic inspections, 233 vehicles were taken off the road, and nine drivers were arrested.

Traffic Accidents and Violations

According to the Police Press Office, of the 58 accidents recorded last week:

  • 1 accident resulted in a fatality
  • 10 accidents caused injuries
  • 47 accidents led to property damage

The fatal accident claimed one life, while 18 individuals were injured in non-fatal crashes.

The primary causes of accidents were:

  • Speeding: 16 cases
  • Failing to stop at intersections: 13 cases
  • Careless driving: 11 cases
  • Following too closely: 10 cases
  • Other factors: 8 cases

The total estimated damage from these accidents amounted to 2,622,232 TL. The regional breakdown of accidents was as follows:

  • Nicosia: 20
  • Kyrenia: 19
  • Famagusta: 12
  • Güzelyurt: 6
  • İskele: 1

Widespread Traffic Inspections

During countrywide traffic inspections last week, police checked 18,000 drivers and issued legal action against 3,242 drivers for various violations.

  • 233 vehicles were taken off the road
  • 9 drivers were arrested

Leading Traffic Violations

The most common offense was speeding, with 1,192 drivers cited. Additionally, 231 speeding violations were detected via mobile traffic monitoring. Other notable violations included:

  • Using a mobile phone while driving: 198 cases
  • Running a red light: 189 cases
  • Driving without a valid registration certificate: 170 cases
  • Failing to obey traffic signs and signals: 145 cases
  • Driving an uninspected vehicle: 80 cases
  • Failing to wear a seatbelt: 76 cases
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol: 48 cases
  • Driving uninsured or outside insurance coverage: 47 cases
  • Careless driving: 43 cases
  • Dangerous driving: 21 cases
  • Obstructed visibility due to window tinting: 20 cases
  • Operating an unauthorized passenger transport service: 18 cases
  • Driving without a license: 15 cases
  • Violating lighting regulations: 13 cases
  • Failure to wear a helmet on a motorcycle: 7 cases
  • Unauthorized use of a private vehicle for goods transport: 3 cases
  • Other traffic violations: 957 cases

The police continue to enforce strict traffic regulations to reduce accidents and improve road safety across the country.
