Christodoulides Opposes Displacement of Palestinians
Cyprus stands against the displacement of Palestinians from their land, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Tuesday.
“Our position is against the displacement of Palestinians,” he said when asked about Trump’s plan to take over Gaza that he announced last Wednesday.
Christodoulides added that Cyprus stood firmly behind the European Union’s approach.
He rejected Trumps intentions to create a Riviera of the Middle East under US control that would ultimately lead to the displacement of nearly two million Palestinians.
At the beginning of January, Christodoulides had said “the concern of the Palestinians, of the international community, which we also share, is that the population does not leave Gaza.”
The president later said that he hailed the ceasefire agreement struck between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, adding that the release of all hostages and the humanitarian aid were of upmost priority.
Trump’s announcement was met with outrage by almost all EU-member states amongst fears of further escalations in the region.
