Minister Arıklı: More Cameras to Be Installed, Modern Systems on the Way

Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arıklı announced plans to increase the number of traffic cameras and replace outdated systems with modern, recording-enabled cameras. These new cameras will be donated to Northern Cyprus by Turkey.

Arıklı stated that the outdated speed detection cameras would be replaced with upgraded models, which are expected to be installed at key locations starting in early April.
Addressing criticism of the ministry over traffic accidents, Arıklı acknowledged technical and administrative shortcomings but emphasized that reckless driving, speeding, and the ease of obtaining driver’s licenses were major contributing factors.
"Traffic Accidents Continue Unabated"
Speaking at a meeting of the Traffic and Transport Services Commission, Arıklı highlighted the ongoing issue of traffic accidents, calling it a “societal wound.”
He pointed out that while road conditions and government oversight are frequently blamed, factors such as driver negligence, excessive speed, and alcohol consumption are often overlooked.
Arıklı urged members of parliament’s Traffic Commission to participate in discussions on pending legislation that could significantly improve road safety.
He also recalled a recent commission decision regarding traffic cameras, confirming that the new camera systems would be operational by April.
Additionally, Arıklı addressed the issue of breathalyzer use, noting a dispute between the Police General Directorate and the Ministry of Health that has delayed implementation. He also raised concerns over the lack of roadside drug testing, citing a recent case of a driver under the influence of narcotics.
Finally, the minister discussed the enforcement of tachographs for heavy vehicles, emphasizing that Turkey had successfully tackled similar issues through such measures. The meeting included a presentation by Mechanical Engineers’ Chamber President Ayer Yarkıner, focusing on the proposed changes.
