Ministry’s Negligence Blamed for Donkey Massacre in Karpaz

Fırat Borak, head of the Karpaz Environmental Protection Association, stated that the Ministry's negligence played a role in the massacre of wild donkeys, emphasizing that the management protocol signed last year was never implemented.

Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV’s "Gündem" program with Ulaş Barış, Borak criticized the ongoing failure to resolve the issue of wild donkeys in Karpaz, which has persisted for 40 years.
Borak condemned the recent killings and highlighted the dual impact of the donkey population in the region. While these animals damage agricultural land, they also serve as a key attraction for tourists.
Despite an agreement signed last year between the Ministry of Tourism and Taşkent Nature Park for donkey management, Borak pointed out that no action was taken. Expected to begin in May, fieldwork was postponed due to financial difficulties, ultimately leading to the current crisis.
He stressed that local residents were deeply outraged, stating, "No one approves of this situation; everyone is devastated."
Borak urged the Environmental Protection Department and other authorities to launch a full investigation and bring those responsible to justice.
He accused the Ministry of Tourism of failing to fulfill its responsibilities, calling the massacre a "crime and an act of brutality." Borak warned that this negligence has caused severe damage to both the local community and the region’s tourism industry.
