In a statement issued by the ministry’s press office, Ataoğlu expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing that such acts of cruelty are unacceptable.

Highlighting Karpaz as a region renowned for its unique natural beauty and free-roaming donkeys, Ataoğlu stressed that these animals are an integral part of both the region’s and the country’s cultural and natural heritage. He reaffirmed that the ministry considers the protection and welfare of the donkeys a top priority.

Ataoğlu noted that previous initiatives had been launched to address issues related to the free-roaming donkey population through humane and sustainable solutions. As part of these efforts, the Environment Protection Department, Taşkent Nature Park, and Erenköy-Karpaz Municipality signed the Donkey Management Project Cooperation Protocol, aiming to ensure sustainable and animal-friendly measures for the donkeys in the region.

Reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities, Ataoğlu stated: "However, this tragic incident highlights the need to intensify our efforts and calls for increased awareness and engagement from local authorities, civil society organizations, and the local community. We must remember that protecting our nature and all living beings within it is our greatest responsibility to future generations. With this awareness, we will continue to work tirelessly to safeguard Karpaz’s unique ecosystem and cultural heritage.”
