"A Brutal Crime That Cannot Go Unpunished"

Medical and environmental organizations have strongly condemned the brutal killing of donkeys in the Karpas region, calling for immediate action to prevent all forms of animal cruelty and to raise public awareness.

In a joint statement, the Cyprus Turkish Medical Association, Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Physicians, Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Dentists, Biologists’ Association, Lefke Environment and Promotion Association, KEMA Foundation, Green Peace Movement, and Universal Patients' Rights Association expressed outrage over reports that at least 14 donkeys were mercilessly slaughtered.
"The killing of these innocent animals, which have become a symbol of Cyprus, is a grave assault on both human dignity and nature. The fact that a pregnant mother was slaughtered along with her unborn foal is particularly horrifying and deeply wounds our collective conscience," the statement read.
The organizations warned that violence against animals is not only a crime against nature but also a threat to societal values, as such acts can normalize brutality and pave the way for further violence. They urged authorities to launch an immediate investigation and enact stricter laws with severe penalties to prevent such atrocities in the future.
Emphasizing that protecting nature and all living beings is a fundamental responsibility of every individual, the organizations called on society to stand against animal cruelty as a crucial step toward building a more humane and peaceful community.
