TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs: "South Cyprus-Egypt Agreement is Null and Invalid"

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has reacted to the hydrocarbon agreements signed by the Greek Cypriot Administration with Egypt.

In a statement, the Ministry emphasized that the Greek Cypriot leadership continues its longstanding policy of creating faits accomplis to seize the rights of Turkish Cypriots since 1963.
The statement pointed out that, during his visit to Cairo, the Greek Cypriot leader signed a series of agreements regarding the marketing of hydrocarbons around the island with Egypt and several multinational companies, at the expense of disregarding the rights of the Turkish Cypriot people, who are equal owners of the island's natural resources. "These agreements, which the Turkish Cypriots were not part of and did not consent to, have no validity and are null and void," the statement stressed.
It continued, “The Greek Cypriot leader, Hristodulidis, must immediately cease taking steps that could bring not only our island but also our region to the brink of conflict by overstepping his bounds.”
The statement further criticized certain countries for making agreements with the Greek Cypriot side due to their own national interests, leading the Greek Cypriot leadership to suffer from a "power intoxication," causing them to disconnect from reality.
“The Greek Cypriot leadership, with the support it receives from the international community, continues its false narrative that it seeks an agreement on the island. In reality, their true aim is not to reach a lasting and sustainable agreement, but to ensure the continuation of the status quo,” the statement added. It also mentioned that the Greek Cypriot side aims to maintain unjust isolation on the Turkish Cypriot people while continuing its hegemonic approach through developing bilateral relations.
The statement concluded by stressing that, given the Greek Cypriot side's uncompromising stance on not wanting to establish any partnership with the Turkish Cypriots, it is now crucial for the international community to recognize the reality on the ground in Cyprus, i.e., to accept the existence of two states. The Turkish Cypriot people are determined to start negotiations with the aim of establishing good neighborly relations between the two states, reaffirming their sovereign equality and equal international status.
