Hasipoğlu: "CTP Struggles to Define a Clear Roadmap on Cyprus Issue"

National Unity Party (UBP) Secretary-General Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu has criticized the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) for its stance on the Cyprus issue, arguing that the party lacks a consistent roadmap. Questioning CTP’s position, Hasipoğlu asked, “If you reject the status quo in the absence of a settlement, where will you turn?”

Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV, Hasipoğlu argued that CTP is indecisive in its approach, questioning its stance by asking, “If you reject the status quo in the absence of a settlement, where will you turn?”
As the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) approaches the presidential election period, Hasipoğlu accused CTP of clinging to outdated negotiation frameworks and failing to adapt to the changing political landscape. He pointed out that the federal solution model, based on United Nations parameters, has been pursued for over 40 years without success. “We have seen time and again that negotiations based on these outdated parameters lead nowhere,” he said, adding that UBP has called for a new political status that reflects the realities on the island.
Hasipoğlu criticized CTP for continuing to advocate for a federation while ignoring the repeated failures of negotiations. He stressed that Greek Cypriot leadership has historically refused to share power, making a federal solution unrealistic. “Waiting for concessions from the Greek Cypriot side is a fantasy,” he stated, emphasizing that the Turkish Cypriot side must pursue alternative approaches to secure its future.
Addressing TRNC’s international recognition efforts, Hasipoğlu highlighted the importance of strengthening diplomatic ties beyond the island. He stated that UBP is working to ensure that TRNC’s voice is heard across the world, regardless of geographical location. “Whether it be in Europe, Asia, or America, we are determined to bring international attention to the Turkish Cypriot cause,” he said.
Hasipoğlu underlined the crucial role of Turkey as TRNC’s strongest ally in the fight for recognition. He noted that Turkey, as a key global player with extensive diplomatic influence, has been instrumental in advocating for TRNC’s rights on international platforms. “Turkey is one of the most influential countries in today’s world order, and its support is of vital importance to us,” he said.
He also revealed that TRNC will participate alongside Turkey in the upcoming 5+1 informal Cyprus talks in Geneva, set to take place in March. “We will continue to defend our just cause,” Hasipoğlu affirmed.
Turning to Greek Cypriot policies, Hasipoğlu accused the Greek Cypriot administration of avoiding any form of cooperation with TRNC. He pointed out that efforts to collaborate on border crossings, energy resources, and environmental projects have been repeatedly blocked by the Greek Cypriot leadership. “Their refusal to engage in joint initiatives stems from their fear of acknowledging TRNC’s legitimacy,” he asserted.
Hasipoğlu also referenced previous remarks by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, who urged the Greek Cypriot leadership to overcome its concerns about TRNC’s growing international engagement. “TRNC is an equal entity on this island,” Hasipoğlu said. “We have just as much right to this land and its resources as the Greek Cypriots do. The basis of any future talks must reflect this reality. The Greek Cypriot leadership must abandon its outdated perspective of treating us as a minority.”
In conclusion, Hasipoğlu reiterated UBP’s commitment to advocating for a two-state solution and ensuring that TRNC secures its rightful place in the international community. “Our path is clear: we will continue to fight for our sovereignty, our equality, and our future,” he declared.
