Atun: Proposal for 1,500 Signatures for Presidential Candidacy "Not Illogical"

UBP Parliamentary Group Leader Sunat Atun has stated that the proposal requiring presidential candidates to collect 1,500 signatures is not unreasonable and should be discussed. The proposal, put forward by Minister of Public Works and Transport and YDP leader Erhan Arıklı as part of the "Election and Referendum (Amendment) Bill," aims to introduce a new requirement for candidacy.

Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV’s morning news program, Atun emphasized that politics in the country needs to regain credibility, which requires time and careful deliberation. He noted that UBP has begun internal discussions and plans to consult with the main opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) on the matter.

"We Must Restore the Reputation of Politics"

Atun stressed the need to elevate the status of politics not only in the presidential elections but across all sectors, as a duty to both current and future generations. He underscored that politics is meant to serve the people, stating, “A politician who is disconnected from the public cannot be effective.”

"UBP and CTP Candidates Cannot Be Equated with Others"

Highlighting that UBP and CTP have been the dominant political parties for the past 50 years, Atun expressed hope that they would continue to thrive for many more years. He argued that candidates nominated by these two major parties cannot be considered on the same level as other independent candidates.

However, Atun also reaffirmed the principle of equality in democracy, emphasizing that the constitution and the legal system of Northern Cyprus are based on the principle of equal rights for all individuals.
