Serim’s Lawyer Responds to Özel’s Allegations: "We Will Take Legal Action Against Defamation"

Claims made by Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Özgür Özel against Yasin Ekrem Serim, Turkey’s Ambassador to Nicosia, are being taken to court. Serim’s lawyer, Ömer Faruk Karagüzel, stated, “We will continue to exercise our legal rights against all baseless news and slander.”

In response to Özel’s statements during a parliamentary group meeting, Karagüzel emphasized that the accusations against Serim were defamatory and aimed at tarnishing his reputation. He denied any connection between his client and individuals allegedly involved in illegal activities, stating that all of Serim’s past transactions and asset declarations were on official record.
Karagüzel dismissed allegations that Serim had co-founded a company with the late businessman Halil Falyalı, asserting that Serim never engaged in any business partnerships with the accused. He explained that Serim’s involvement in Northern Associates Trading Limited was solely for the purpose of a real estate transaction, and the transfer of shares was a routine business operation.
The lawyer also challenged Özel to clarify his remarks regarding “ships sailing in international waters” and accused him of attempting to manipulate public perception for political gain.
Karagüzel reiterated that legal proceedings were ongoing and that there was no final court ruling on the matter. He stressed that all accusations against Serim were false and vowed to pursue legal action against defamatory claims.
What Did Özgür Özel Say?
During his speech, Özgür Özel questioned Serim’s appointment as ambassador, referencing his father, Maksut Serim, and alleging that Serim had business ties with Halil Falyalı. He also raised concerns about unspecified activities involving ships in international waters and potential financial irregularities.
