According to a statement from the Presidency, Tatar expressed satisfaction with the visit and emphasized the importance of the committee in addressing current issues. He also pointed out certain unfair practices and restrictions related to border crossings.

Haspolat Crossing

Tatar noted that discussions have been ongoing regarding the opening of Haspolat crossing for commercial vehicles, including taxis. He explained that allowing the transit of goods and materials related to trade under the Green Line Regulation through the Haspolat Industrial Zone would reduce traffic congestion at Metehan and enhance economic activity.

However, he stressed that the TRNC could not allow transit crossings that might pose security concerns. Instead, he suggested opening the Akıncılar checkpoint as an alternative. Describing this as a positive and constructive proposal, Tatar argued that the Akıncılar crossing would benefit both the North and the South, facilitating economic exchanges.

Touching on the informal meeting scheduled for March, Tatar reaffirmed that sovereign equality and equal international status remain his administration’s red lines, stating that they would never compromise on these principles. He emphasized that their struggle for recognition would continue.

Tatar acknowledged the historical expectations and aspirations of both communities and expressed support for cooperation between the two states in mutually beneficial projects. He thanked the committee members for their efforts and wished them success in their work.

İçim Çağıner Kavuklu, Chair of the Bicommunal Technical Committee on Economic and Commercial Affairs, provided Tatar with updates on the meetings and activities undertaken for the benefit of both communities. She also highlighted the committee’s efforts in fostering economic development and implementing comprehensive projects aimed at enhancing cooperation.
