In a statement marking the 61st anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 186, adopted on March 4, 1964, Hasipoğlu emphasized that the United Nations has disregarded the will of the Turkish Cypriot side for over six decades and that Turkish Cypriots have long deserved recognition of their sovereign equality and equal international status.

Pointing out the ongoing isolation imposed on Turkish Cypriots, Hasipoğlu asserted that the TRNC will inevitably claim its rightful place on the international stage.

“A Decision that No Longer Reflects Reality”

Hasipoğlu criticized Resolution 186 as outdated and called for its revision in light of the realities on the island.

"Instead of fostering a solution, the UN Security Council has fueled deadlock and provided a comfort zone for the Greek Cypriot side. Law, equality, humanity, and the right to live were all ignored with this decision," he said.

“Turkish Cypriots Have Been Ignored for 61 Years”

Hasipoğlu accused the UN of ignoring Turkish Cypriot rights for six decades while offering support to the Greek Cypriot administration, which he referred to as the "so-called Republic of Cyprus."

“Under the shadow of violent attacks launched by Greek armed forces to eliminate Turkish Cypriots, the UN Security Council, through Resolution 186, unilaterally recognized the Republic of Cyprus as the sole legitimate authority and declared that it would disregard the sovereign rights of Turkish Cypriots,” he said.

“This Outdated Resolution Must Be Revised”

Referring to the failed negotiation processes, Hasipoğlu stressed that the resolution is outdated and should be reassessed.

"The UN Security Council must finally take Kofi Annan's 2004 report into account and put an end to the isolation imposed on Turkish Cypriots," he stated.

Hasipoğlu further argued that the UN has continuously made Turkish Cypriots pay the price for its mistakes and cited the 2017 Crans-Montana negotiations as an example, claiming that the Greek Cypriot side, emboldened by Resolution 186, walked away from the table without hesitation.

“The TRNC Will Claim Its Rightful Place”

Highlighting the shift in TRNC policy since 2017, particularly with Turkey’s support, Hasipoğlu reiterated the call for international engagement with the TRNC.

"As President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has repeatedly stated in the UN General Assembly, the time has come for the world to establish political, economic, and social relations with the TRNC. With Turkey’s support, the TRNC will eventually take its rightful place internationally, overcoming the obstacles to strengthening ties with the Turkish states and other key global organizations."
