Ali Kişmir: If We Do Not Defend Freedom of Expression, the Future Will Be Dark

Press-Sen President, journalist, and writer Ali Kişmir warned that society’s freedom of expression is under threat, calling on everyone to react strongly. Kişmir stated that laws restricting freedom of expression, which they have long struggled against, are being reintroduced to parliament, urging society to take action.

Speaking on the "Morning News with Canan Onurer" program on Kıbrıs Postası TV, Kişmir emphasized that the fight for freedom of expression is facing a serious threat across the country.
"First Time in Court"
Recalling that he is on trial for a social media post, Kişmir said, "This is the first time I have ever faced trial, and it is a first for me. However, in this country, those who should be tried are the ones sitting in those seats, while many deserving of applause are waiting in court corridors. This equation is not right."
Kişmir noted that he could not predict the outcome of his case, adding that they were in contact with the Turkish Press Union and Basın-İş in Turkey to seek information and support.
"The Situation in Turkey Is Frightening"
Drawing attention to the journalistic climate in Turkey, Kişmir highlighted the pressures and prison sentences faced by journalists, particularly in recent years.
"In Turkey, journalists can receive prison sentences just for conducting an interview. Even if there is no prison sentence, there are significant pressures, and journalists are being silenced. Many have had to leave the country. This is unacceptable," he said.
Kişmir also underlined that journalism is becoming increasingly difficult in the TRNC, with journalists refraining from reporting on sensitive issues to protect their jobs.
"Everyone Must Defend Freedom of Expression"
Referring to the pressures during the 2020 presidential elections, Kişmir predicted a similarly tense atmosphere in this year's elections.
"If society does not react in the next one or two months, many citizens could face lawsuits during the election period due to their social media posts," he warned.
Kişmir reiterated that laws restricting freedom of expression are being reintroduced to parliament, urging the public to mobilize and respond firmly.
"Freedom of Expression Is a Fundamental Right for All"
Describing journalism as a social responsibility rather than a profession, Kişmir emphasized that everyone must defend freedom of expression.
"We are entering a period where everyone must fight for their personal rights and freedoms. Freedom of expression is a fundamental right not only for journalists but for all people," he said, calling on society to unite in defense of this right.
