Gunmen Remanded for Six More Days Following Shooting in Nicosia

Muharem Lermi and his accomplice Metin Eminanç, who were arrested for the shooting of Ahmet Keskin in Nicosia, appeared in court yesterday morning. Police officer Özgür Sunalp presented the details of the case before the judge.

According to the police, the suspects were detained in connection with charges of "serious injury, unlawful possession and use of a firearm, unlawful possession of explosives, and discharging a firearm in a residential area." The incident took place on February 22, 2025, at around 3:15 p.m. at the restaurant "Doyduk Doyduk" on Şht. Mustafa Ahmet Ruso Street in Nicosia, where Lermi allegedly fired a single shot at restaurant operator Ahmet Keskin, wounding him in the right thigh.
Following the shooting, police arrested Lermi at around 5:00 p.m. at Ercan Airport as he attempted to leave the country. The Glock-brand firearm used in the attack was found near the crime scene with eight rounds of ammunition. Investigators determined that Eminanç had provided the weapon to Lermi on February 20. Eminanç was subsequently arrested on February 23.
Both suspects have reportedly given voluntary statements admitting their involvement in the crime. Police stated that the investigation is ongoing, with ballistic analysis of the seized weapon still underway. Authorities are also reviewing multiple witness testimonies and security camera recordings.
Officers noted that both suspects had recently entered the country on tourist visas, and their mobile phones would be examined as part of the investigation. With additional suspects still being sought, police emphasized that the data on the phones could be crucial to the case and requested an extension of the suspects' detention.
After evaluating the testimony, Judge Zehra Yalkut Bilgeç ordered that the suspects remain in custody for six more days.
