Parliament Approves Amendments to Traffic Law: Stricter Penalties for Drunk Driving and Reckless Behavior

The TRNC Parliament has unanimously approved the "Amendment to the Consolidated Road and Traffic Offenses Settlement and Penalty Points Law," introducing stricter measures for traffic violations. Under the new law, drivers exceeding 150 promille blood alcohol levels will be taken to court, while those who flee after a police stop warning will have their licenses revoked.

The regulation also prohibits holding a phone while driving, although the use of Bluetooth or hands-free devices remains allowed.

Penalties for drunk driving have been categorized into three levels, with the most severe punishment reserved for those exceeding 150 promille, who will now be prosecuted rather than fined on the spot.

Additionally, new provisions have been introduced regarding reckless driving, including stricter penalties for evading police stop warnings, which will result in the immediate confiscation of the driver's license.
