Orhan Tolun: “Figures for 2019 Remain Inaccessible”

Orhan Tolun, President of the Association of Turkish Cypriot Travel and Tourism Agencies (KITSAB), provided comments to Kıbrıs Postası following the announcement of the Ministry of Tourism's January-February 2023 data.

According to the Ministry of Tourism's data, Tolun stated that the average occupancy rate of tourist establishments in the country increased to 24.9% during January-February, but emphasized that the key concern is to access the figures from the year before the pandemic, i.e., 2019.

"What's important for us is the year 2019, and we couldn't access the figures for that year," said Tolun.

Tolun highlighted that with the introduction of the new airline company FLY KHY, airfares have decreased by 20%, but even with this reduction, ticket prices are still expensive compared to 2019.

"We need to further lower these figures," stated Tolun, emphasizing the need to support FLY KHY.

Tolun also mentioned that arrivals to the country have increased by over 50% compared to 2022, but 100 out of 160 agencies are still struggling, and the occupancy rates of 2, 3, and 4-star hotels are very low.

Furthermore, Tolun pointed out that a significant number of hotels are closed.

To achieve the desired numbers in 2023, Tolun indicated that hotel prices should be lowered, and promotion efforts should be made, not only by Turkey but also by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus itself, as relying solely on Turkey's promotion efforts is not sufficient.
