Colin Stewart: UN Believes in the Possibility of a Solution in Cyprus

Colin Stewart, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Cyprus and Chief of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), expressed the UN's belief that a solution acceptable to both sides is still possible in Cyprus. Stewart mentioned their efforts to build bridges and trust between the parties.

Speaking at a press conference in New York, Colin Stewart, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Cyprus and Chief of UNFICYP, responded to a question from AA regarding details in the latest UN Peacekeeping Force report about the physical intervention in the Pile-Yiğitler Road Project by Turkish Cypriots and violations by Greek Cypriots in different parts of the buffer zone. Stewart emphasized that the main mission of UNFICYP is to preserve the integrity of the buffer zone and the military status quo to prevent an increase in tension.
Stewart stated that they have witnessed an increase in tension lately, as indicated in the Secretary-General's reports, and said, "This means that the buffer zone has been violated on both sides."
Regarding the UN Peacekeeping Force's actions, Stewart mentioned that their main goal is to prevent an escalation of tension and maintain the integrity of the buffer zone, and they treat each incident individually. He emphasized that it would be a mistake to treat all incidents in different parts of the buffer zone equally since each has its unique characteristics, historical facts, and sensitivities.
Responding to a question about whether there are no specific sensitivities in the Greek Cypriot side's violations, Stewart stated, "Assuming is never correct."
Stewart also mentioned the appointment of Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, former Colombian Minister of Foreign Affairs, as the Special Representative for Cyprus. He stated that the appointment was welcomed by the UN Security Council members and considered an opportunity.
Colin Stewart emphasized that the UN still believes in the possibility of a solution acceptable to both sides in Cyprus, and they are working to build bridges and trust between the parties.
