The press conference, held at the Solidarity House in the buffer zone of Nicosia at 11:30 am, was conducted by Koral Aşam, President of DEV-İŞ, on behalf of Turkish Cypriot unions, and Sotirulla Haralambus, General Secretary of PEO, on behalf of Greek Cypriot unions.

Aşam noted that despite the passage of time since the world was founded, the oppressive and exploitative order continues, emphasizing their determination to continue the labor struggle inherited since 1886.

He stressed that without a stable and united Cyprus, there cannot be stability in workers' rights, highlighting that resuming and concluding the Cyprus talks frozen at Crans Montana in a results-oriented manner would ensure stability for both the region and the island of Cyprus, giving meaning to the workers' struggle.

Aşam reminded those planning to be in the buffer zone for the May Day event to bring their identity cards for passage.

HARALAMBUS

Sotirulla Haralambus, General Secretary of PEO, stated that this year's May 1st would be welcomed by workers in Cyprus and around the world under difficult and harsh conditions, including the attack on workers' rights by neo-liberal policies, wars around the world, genocide committed by Israel, "division in the country," and the ongoing peace negotiations.

He emphasized that the clear message they want to convey on this May Day is the need for policies to address rising costs and impoverishment of the working class. Haralambus pointed out that in the absence of peace and solution, the rights of all segments of Cypriots, whether Turkish, Greek, Latin, Maronite, or Armenian, are being restricted, and the solution lies in resolving the issue.

Haralambus also called on the leaders in Cyprus to invite UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the island to restart the Cyprus negotiations.
