82 Traffic Accidents in One Week: 1 Fatality, 17 Injuries

According to information provided by the Police Press Office, between April 29th and May 5th, a total of 82 traffic accidents occurred. These accidents resulted in 1 fatality, 17 injuries, and 64 cases of vehicle damage. Additionally, 259 vehicles were impounded, and 9 drivers were arrested during this period.

The causes of these accidents were attributed to speeding (24 incidents), careless driving (19 incidents), failure to stop at intersections (14 incidents), tailgating (13 incidents), and other factors (12 incidents).

The distribution of accidents by district is as follows:

  • Nicosia: 36 accidents
  • Famagusta: 15 accidents
  • Kyrenia: 15 accidents
  • Morphou: 7 accidents
  • İskele: 9 accidents

Furthermore, a total of 16,311 vehicle drivers were inspected during traffic checks conducted in the same period, leading to legal action against 3,571 drivers found to have committed offenses.

The breakdown of offenses includes:

  • Speeding: 1,677 cases
  • Speeding detected by mobile devices: 756 cases
  • Reckless driving: 12 cases
  • Careless driving: 36 cases
  • Driving without a navigation license: 151 cases
  • Driving without a driver's license: 14 cases
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol: 112 cases
  • Using a mobile phone while driving: 167 cases
  • Driving without wearing a seatbelt: 43 cases
  • Failure to comply with traffic signs: 84 cases
  • Disregarding traffic lights: 13 cases
  • Driving without a valid inspection: 53 cases
  • Driving without insurance or beyond policy coverage: 50 cases
  • Operating a vehicle for passenger transport without proper authorization: 12 cases
  • Operating a vehicle for freight transport without proper authorization: 6 cases
  • Overloading or carrying hazardous cargo: 4 cases
  • Riding a motorcycle without a protective helmet: 2 cases
  • Violating light regulations or driving with insufficient lighting: 27 cases
  • Other traffic offenses: 1,108 cases
