Greek Cypriot Antonis Artemi Sentenced to 18 Months for Illegal Firearm Possession in Northern Cyprus
Antonis Artemi, a Greek Cypriot citizen, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after being caught with firearms and live ammunition at the Metehan crossing point in Northern Cyprus. The trial concluded yesterday at Nicosia's Assize Court.
The court, presided over by Judge Füsun Cemaller along with Senior Judge Vedia Berkut Barkın and Judge Tutku Candaş, found Artemi guilty of possessing illegal firearms and explosives. Judge Berkut Barkın emphasized the severity of firearm possession, stating it poses a significant danger to society amid rising concerns over violence and crime involving firearms.
Artemi's defense argued that he had absentmindedly left two firearms in his vehicle, attributing the incident to negligence. Despite acknowledging Artemi's acceptance of guilt and his contribution to early justice, the court stressed the need for deterrent sentences to safeguard public peace and security.
The incident occurred on March 26, 2024, when Artemi entered Northern Cyprus through the Metehan border crossing in a vehicle bearing KST 244 plates. Upon inspection, authorities discovered ammunition and an illegal firearm concealed in a black handbag in the vehicle's rear seat compartment.
The court's decision reflects a commitment to uphold public safety and deter crimes that undermine societal tranquility.
