2024: 474 Fires Reported with Damage Exceeding 318 Million TL

In a recent statement to Kıbrıs Postası in light of Fire Brigade Week, the Fire Department reported that there were no major fires in 2024 compared to previous years. This year, a total of 474 fires were recorded, primarily caused by discarded cigarette butts, resulting in damages exceeding 318 million TL.

The Fire Department responded to inquiries about the absence of significant fires this year, noting that, unlike previous years, there have been no large-scale incidents.

Primary Cause of Fires: Cigarettes; Financial Damage Over 318 Million TL

The Fire Department provided details on the causes and occurrences of fires, stating that 474 fires occurred in 2024. They emphasized that the leading cause of these fires was improper disposal of cigarette butts.

The total financial damage from the 474 fires this year was reported to be 318 million 34 thousand TL. The Fire Department also warned that fires in certain regions have the potential to cause significant damage.

Thanks to preventive measures and the timely and coordinated responses from firefighting teams, military personnel, civil defense, municipalities, and the forestry department, larger disasters have been averted.

Previous Years’ Fires and Details

In 2023, there were a total of 544 fires, resulting in damages amounting to 89 million 483 thousand 200 TL.

In 2022, a total of 725 fires were reported, causing injuries to six individuals and resulting in one fatality, with total damages of 273 million 563 thousand 222 TL.

In 2021, there were 882 fires, leading to damages of 15 million 367 thousand TL.
