Guterres: No Common Ground Between Leaders, Informal Expanded Meeting Planned
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that no common ground has been found between the leaders in Cyprus for negotiations, but an agreement has been reached to hold an expanded informal meeting in the near future.
In a written statement, the United Nations (UN) addressed the informal dinner meeting between Guterres, Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides.
The statement expressed Guterres' disappointment that despite the efforts of his personal Cyprus Special Representative, María Angela Holguin Cuellar, and her consultations with the leaders and other key stakeholders, no common ground for moving forward on the Cyprus issue had been established.
Guterres encouraged the leaders to reflect on how to bridge the gap between their positions and rebuild trust to advance the peace process.
Additionally, the statement highlighted that Tatar and Christodoulides agreed to hold a broader informal meeting under the Secretary-General’s auspices in the near future to discuss the way forward. The leaders also reached a consensus to meet in Cyprus to explore the possibility of opening new crossing points.
Guterres reiterated the UN's firm commitment to finding a peaceful solution to the Cyprus issue for the benefit of all Cypriots and future generations.
