Muhtaroğlu: Government Merely Monitored Inflation

Economist Ödül Muhtaroğlu stated that the country has been trapped in an inflation spiral for the past three years, asserting that "the government has limited itself to merely monitoring inflation." Muhtaroğlu made these comments during an appearance on the ‘Sabah Postası’ program, hosted by Gökhan Altıner on Kıbrıs Postası TV.

He emphasized that the government has not taken adequate measures during this period, simply remaining an observer. Muhtaroğlu stressed the need to control opportunism in the market and to impose necessary penalties.

"THE GOVERNMENT JUST WATCHED"

Muhtaroğlu remarked, "The government just watched. They observed inflation without taking action. It was crucial to conduct market inspections and impose fines. There are many opportunists in the country... Many individuals are raising prices, thinking only of short-term profits. Inspections must never be neglected. Savings measures should have been implemented."

"BUDGET DEFICIT IS GROWING"

He noted that the state projected a budget deficit of 6.8 billion TL for 2024, yet this figure has reached 5 billion TL before the year's end. Muhtaroğlu anticipates that the deficit will increase further due to additional salary payments and inflation rises by year-end, stating, “The budget is in this condition because no savings measures were taken.”

"ECONOMIC ORGANIZATIONS AND BUSINESS PEOPLE ALSO REMAINED OBSERVERS"

Muhtaroğlu pointed out that the rise in inflation has gone unaddressed not only by the government but also by economic organizations and business leaders. He stated, “In democratic countries, business people have significant sanctions over the government. However, they react only when the minimum wage is set here.” He emphasized that the government’s erroneous economic policies have not been criticized in a timely manner, urging economic organizations to adopt a more proactive stance.

He also highlighted issues arising from the economic protocol with Turkey, noting that officials from the Republic of Turkey expect certain reforms from the TRNC, which have not been implemented. “This is why there is no flow of resources from Turkey,” Muhtaroğlu remarked, recalling similar issues in the past.

"CONFLICTS WITHIN UBP CONTINUE"

Regarding the crisis surrounding the election for the Speaker of the Assembly, Muhtaroğlu shared his views on the ongoing turmoil. He noted that the elections, which have not been resolved after 15 rounds since October 1, have led to serious chaos, indicating that internal conflicts within the UBP continue. He stated, “There are three invalid ballots. According to the election and referendum law, these should be considered invalid.”

"I ADMIRE TURKEY'S ECONOMIC POLICIES"

Muhtaroğlu expressed admiration for Turkey’s economic policies, saying, “They have stopped unnecessary employment, cut expenses, and are fighting against the informal economy. However, our officials have left the economy to fend for itself.”

In conclusion, Muhtaroğlu called on the TRNC government to implement necessary measures for economic policies aimed at 2025.
