Öztürkler Accuses Özdenefe of "Drawing a Picture of Occupation"

Parliament Speaker Ziya Öztürkler criticized the opposition's handling of the recent Speaker election, asserting that double-stamped votes went unchallenged for 14 rounds, yet were suddenly deemed invalid when he secured 26 votes in the 15th round. Öztürkler invited those questioning the election to examine all ballots, emphasizing that no objections had been raised over similar stamps in previous rounds.

Speaking on Sabah Postası, hosted by Gökhan Altıner on Kıbrıs Postası TV, Öztürkler accused Republican Turkish Party (CTP) MP Fazilet Özdenefe of unlawfully presiding over the assembly while he, as Speaker, was present. "By sitting there, Özdenefe painted a picture of occupation," he said, describing the session as an illegal takeover.

Öztürkler alleged that CTP’s actions reflected a pursuit of control rather than serving the public through Parliament. He argued that the authority to elect the Speaker lies with the General Assembly, not the CTP, and criticized the party’s recurring claims that he was "illegally appointed."

Recalling that Parliament’s legal advisors declared his victory on October 18, Öztürkler mentioned that the subsequent shift in opinion came without formal documentation or clarity on who initiated the inquiry. He questioned the CTP’s reliance on specific legal opinions over the Attorney General’s view, asserting that parliamentary elections followed the assembly’s internal regulations, not public election laws.

Öztürkler affirmed that he desired CTP’s presence in Parliament, clarifying that there was no intent to exclude them from legislative proceedings.
