Çavuoğlu: Earthquake Fund Was Not Diverted, Crisis Resolved
Minister of National Education Nazım Çavuoğlu assured that the funds collected for the earthquake relief efforts were not used for other purposes, stating that delays in payments have been addressed and reinforcement work continues.
Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV’s “Sabah Postası” program, hosted by Gökhan Altıner, Çavuoğlu provided clarifications.
Çavuoğlu responded to claims made by Burak Maviş, General Secretary of the Cyprus Turkish Teachers' Union (KTÖS), who alleged that the Ministry of Finance redirected payments from the earthquake fund, halting school reinforcement projects. “As the Ministry, we are diligently continuing the work of the Earthquake Committee. There has been no interruption in the committee’s activities. While certain delays occurred due to procedural communications within the Ministry of Finance, this does not imply that the work has stopped. Payment delays may have slowed down the process at some schools, but necessary work is ongoing,” Çavuoğlu stated.
Addressing KTÖS’s protest regarding the suspension of reinforcement work at Şht. Yalçın Primary School due to unpaid funds, Çavuoğlu noted that a meeting was held a day before the demonstration, during which the crisis was resolved. “It is important not to mislead the public; the issue had already been addressed before it became a topic of discussion,” he said.
