Medical Association Calls for Reliable Census to Inform Realistic Policies
The Turkish Cypriot Medical Association (KTTB) has urged authorities to conduct an accurate and reliable population census, arguing that the reported figure of 476,000 by the Statistics Institution does not reflect reality, hindering the planning of health services.
In a written statement, KTTB criticized the current population estimates as unreliable and highlighted their impact on socio-economic policies. The association emphasized that proper planning in areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social services relies on accurate population data.
"The population projections shared for 2023 are purely speculative and lack any solid foundation," the statement said. "Attempting to govern based on these figures disregards the public's needs."
KTTB stressed that effective healthcare planning is impossible without accurate data on population demographics and service needs, leading to higher costs due to inadequate infrastructure and patient referrals.
The statement also pointed to unregulated population growth and undocumented migration, which complicate access to healthcare, education, and social services, and called for policies to address these challenges.
"This Situation Is Unsustainable"
The association described the lack of a reliable census as unsustainable, noting that it prevents authorities from identifying infrastructure needs.
"A reliable census must be conducted immediately, transparently, and in line with international standards. It should include undocumented populations, analyze migration trends, and develop appropriate policies. A realistic healthcare budget and infrastructure must be planned based on accurate population data," KTTB concluded.
