Çeler Criticizes CTP Over Lack of Coordination
Leader of the Social Democratic Party (TDP), Zeki Çeler, has expressed disappointment with the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) for issuing a statement prior to the recent Parliament Speaker election without consulting him, despite their ongoing cooperation.
Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV’s Objektif program hosted by Erçin Şahmaran, Çeler highlighted his grievances over what he described as a breach of trust between the opposition parties.
Çeler emphasized that over the past six weeks, constitutional violations had occurred regarding the election for Parliament Speaker, pointing to the ruling UBP’s instability. He noted that the prolonged process, with the Speaker unable to be elected over 15-16 rounds, had opened the door for an early election opportunity. However, he criticized the CTP for making a sudden statement late at night, which, according to him, altered the course of events.
Following Ziya Öztürkler’s election as Parliament Speaker, Çeler remarked that certain facial expressions and celebrations raised legitimate doubts. While he could not confirm claims that the opposition supported Öztürkler, he argued that CTP also had no evidence to refute the allegations.
As a social democrat and leader of a left-wing party, Çeler underlined the importance of addressing differences and suspicions openly. "If we cannot voice our concerns, there’s no need for our existence," he stated.
He also criticized the lack of consultation from the CTP regarding their statement, stating that it contributed to the prevailing doubts. "That statement only increased reasonable suspicion," Çeler concluded, noting his disappointment in the party’s approach.
