Simon Mistriel Aykut, accused of exploiting former Greek Cypriot properties in Northern Cyprus, will remain in custody in the Republic of Cyprus after the court rejected a request for his detention to be continued under strict supervision outside prison.
Aykut's lawyers cited tuberculosis cases in the Central Prisons as a health risk and proposed alternative measures, including electronic monitoring and house arrest at a synagogue in Nicosia. They argued his advanced age and health conditions warranted such arrangements.
However, the court ruled that immediate action had been taken to contain the tuberculosis outbreak and noted that Aykut was not housed in the affected section.
Aykut’s detention has been extended until the next hearing on December 6, 2024.
