Schinas: Resolution of Cyprus Issue is a Key Priority for the EU
European Parliament Vice President Margaritis Schinas has emphasized that resolving the Cyprus issue remains a primary concern for the European Union.
Speaking during a European Parliament plenary session addressing the Cyprus problem, coinciding with the 41st anniversary of the founding of the TRNC, Schinas reiterated the EU’s commitment to a federal solution.
Schinas dismissed proposals for a two-state solution as "empty promises," asserting that such ideas lack any foundation within the EU. He underscored that the EU recognizes the "Republic of Cyprus" as the sole legitimate state on the island and condemns any violation of its territorial integrity.
The EU, Schinas stated, continues to support a settlement based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, aligned with EU values and under the framework of UN-led efforts. He also highlighted the European Commission’s role in supporting reconciliation efforts, citing financial aid programs for the Turkish Cypriot community. Between 2006 and 2024, the EU allocated €727 million for such initiatives.
