Minister Arıklı Calls on Ali Kişmir to Apologize
Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı made a striking statement on social media regarding the ongoing trial of journalist Ali Kişmir, emphasizing freedom of expression and calling for an apology.
Arıklı suggested that the term "brothel" used by Kişmir had exceeded its intended meaning and that Kişmir himself knew this. He called on Kişmir to apologize in order to either reduce or resolve the case entirely.
In his statement, Arıklı said:
"Ali Kişmir is my friend. Despite making the harshest criticisms towards me, our friendship has remained intact. However, it is clear that the use of the term 'brothel' was beyond its intended meaning. He knows very well that this expression was not aimed at the honorable Turkish Army. A two-sentence explanation would be enough to put this issue to rest."
Arıklı further alleged that Kişmir was influenced by those trying to complicate the process while pretending to defend himself. He also claimed that certain groups were attempting to present the case as an example of lack of freedom of expression in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
"If Ali softens this expression or offers an apology, the case could have been resolved with a simple warning or a fine," Arıklı concluded.
