Harmancı: "We Need Crossing Points Without Becoming Hostage to Others' Agendas"
Mayor of Nicosia Turkish Municipality Mehmet Harmancı emphasized the importance of diplomatic efforts in Cyprus and the necessity of crossing points to enhance intercommunal relations.
Speaking on Gündem, a program on Kıbrıs Postası TV hosted by Ulaş Barış, Harmancı highlighted ongoing talks and the commitment to further discussions with the Mayor of South Nicosia.
Crossing Point Demands on the Table
Harmancı revealed that crossing point demands had been revisited, stressing both financial and moral support for their establishment. “We will table the information and diplomatic insights shared with us. If these discussions are pursued, I believe this process won’t be in vain,” he stated.
Aligning Efforts Across Nicosia
Addressing broader urban needs, Harmancı mentioned the importance of revitalizing areas like the jewelers' street in parallel with developments in other parts of Nicosia. “This is a necessity,” he remarked.
Call for Federative Solutions
Harmancı linked improved intercommunal relations to advancing a federative solution, urging Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides to open additional crossing points. “If we want collective progress in Nicosia, we need to move closer to a federative resolution,” he said.
A Collaborative Approach
Harmancı noted the potential for cooperation between leaders, suggesting that both sides can find mutually beneficial solutions. “We’ve expressed readiness to collaborate on key issues, including electricity. Investments shouldn’t go to waste. If conditions need to be met, let’s create solutions together,” he added.
Need for Action
Highlighting the urgency, Harmancı said: “We need crossing points. However, this need must not become hostage to other agendas. Lobbying efforts should focus on advancing processes for the public’s benefit.”
The mayor also mentioned developments following an October 15 meeting, suggesting that progress is expected to accelerate, with key dates anticipated in January. “Public consensus reflects acceptance across all parties, but there are points we still need to advance during this process,” Harmancı concluded.
