Aslı Murat: "We Will Continue the Fight for Probable Intent Until the Final Verdict"
Lawyer Aslı Murat commented on the recent "reckless intent" ruling in the İsias Hotel case, stating, "We will continue the fight for probable intent until the final verdict."
During the tragedy at the İsias Hotel, prosecutors pursued charges of "reckless intent" rather than "probable intent." The court held all defendants accountable but ruled that Ahmet Bozkurt could not have willingly risked his own family’s lives, who were staying at the hotel, thereby issuing a verdict of reckless intent.
Appearing on Kıbrıs Postası TV’s Gündem program, hosted by Ulaş Barış, Murat emphasized that the decision could change and noted the presence of evidence supporting probable intent.
Citing expert reports, Murat stated that the defendants’ responsibilities were clearly outlined, with specific mention of structural weaknesses caused by modifications such as elevator additions. She highlighted further negligence, including a lack of soil surveys, structural reinforcement, and deficiencies in construction and oversight processes.
"The court rejected the defense's request for a new expert report, which is a significant step," Murat said. She expressed determination, adding, "There is no room for despair before the final verdict. Everyone remains steadfast in their fight."
Murat confirmed her intention to attend the hearing scheduled for December 24.
