Hasipoğlu Criticizes Greek Cypriot Arms Expansion: "A Threat to Peace on the Island"
UBP Secretary-General Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu has criticized the Greek Cypriot Administration for its recent moves, including its NATO membership aspirations and plans to integrate Israel's Iron Dome air defense system, claiming these actions reveal its true intentions regarding Cyprus.
In a written statement, Hasipoğlu expressed concern over what he called provocative steps by the Greek Cypriot Administration, which he argued only serve to disturb the peace between the island's two communities. He urged the administration to reconsider its actions.
Hasipoğlu accused Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides of endangering the island’s peace for political gain, stating: "While claiming to advocate for peace in international forums such as the UN and EU, the Greek Cypriot Administration's acquisition of new weapons, including the Iron Dome, underscores its contradictions."
Questioning the need for advanced air defense systems, Hasipoğlu said the arms race, fueled by weapons sales from countries like the United States and France, undermines regional stability.
He also highlighted Turkey's significant regional power, stating: "The Greek Cypriots should understand by now that their military buildup against the Turkish Cypriot people is a futile effort in the face of Turkey's strength."
