Tatar: "Informal Meetings Can Be Held Under Suitable Conditions"

President Ersin Tatar emphasized that informal meetings could take place if conditions are favorable but warned against being drawn into deceptive maneuvers. Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV's Sabah Postası program, hosted by Gökhan Altıner, Tatar reiterated the importance of Turkish Cypriot sovereignty and the continuation of the independence struggle, asserting that any resolution process must proceed without compromising sovereignty.

Discussing the disagreements regarding new crossing points, Tatar pointed out differences between the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot expectations. "We discussed opening a crossing point, but the Greek Cypriots are seeking transit passages through Turkish military zones in Kıracıköy and Erenköy. This is unacceptable," he stated.

Tatar highlighted the economic benefits of a crossing point in Haspolat, which would also alleviate traffic congestion at Metehan. He expressed disappointment, saying, "This is not what we agreed on during our talks in New York. We talked about a crossing point, not a transit route."

Sovereignty at the Core

Recalling advice from the late Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktaş, Tatar quoted him saying, "Do not compromise your sovereignty." He stressed that sovereignty is the cornerstone of any agreement, remarking, "A deal without sovereignty is written on ice—it will melt away." Tatar advocated for the establishment of two sovereign states on the island and reiterated his openness to negotiations based on sovereign equality.

"If an agreement is reached, our tourism potential will increase, more tourists from Turkey will come, and this region could become a paradise," he noted, emphasizing the Turkish Cypriot people's resilience over the past 61 years and the crucial role of Turkish forces in maintaining peace on the island.

A New Political Vision

Regarding informal talks, Tatar clarified that he would not resume negotiations from where they left off in Crans-Montana, reaffirming his commitment to a new political vision supported by Turkey. "Informal meetings can take place if conditions allow, but we must not be drawn into a game," he said. Responding to criticisms, he asserted, "They may claim 'Tatar fled,' but Tatar has not fled; Tatar has introduced a new policy."

Comments on Fake Diploma Scandal

Addressing the recent fake diploma scandal at the Cyprus Health and Social Sciences University, Tatar described it as a self-inflicted wound. He called for a resolution through the Higher Education Planning, Accreditation, and Coordination Board (YÖDAK), law enforcement, and the judiciary, urging critics to avoid exploiting the issue politically.

"There is a system and a state in place, with courts, prosecutors, and YÖDAK to address this matter. Publicizing this issue daily only serves to harm our credibility," Tatar said, criticizing the opposition for capitalizing on the situation for political gain.

Tatar’s remarks reflect his firm stance on sovereignty, his openness to progress under suitable conditions, and his call for responsible handling of national challenges.
